Bagerhat's Rampal coal-based thermal power plant has stopped production once again due to coal shortage. The production of this power plant has been stopped since the night of April 23. Basically, this situation has arisen because of the dollar crisis, coal cannot be imported. However, the power plant authorities say that production will start again in the coal-based thermal power plant within a few weeks.
Anwarul Azim, Deputy General Manager of Bangladesh-India Partnership Power Company Limited (BIFPCL) said, 'Due to the coal shortage, the plant's production has been stopped since the night of April 23. Various processes have been completed to bring coal. We hope to be able to start production again around May 3.'
Earlier, power generation from Rampal thermal power plant stopped on January 14 this year due to coal shortage. After a month of normalization of coal supply, Rampal power plant returned to production. Later, the production of this mega project was stopped again from the night of April 15 due to mechanical failure. The center became operational on April 18 after being closed for three days.
Power generation from the first unit of 660 MW under the 1320 MW Maitri Super Thermal Power Project at Rampal was officially started on September 6 last year. It was decided to purchase 80 lakh metric tonnes of coal under a long-term contract to keep the power plant operational at the initial stage. So far 267 thousand 752 metric tons of coal has been imported from Indonesia for Rampal power plant.
A responsible source said, mainly due to the dollar crisis, Bangladesh Bank was in a tough position to open LCs for the import of unnecessary and luxury goods for a long time. Coal also falls on that list. In such a situation, there was an apprehension about when the coal import would be normalized and the power plant would return to normal production. In this situation, considering the issue of power generation, Bangladesh Bank directed the state-owned banks to open LCs for coal import on January 17.
