Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Thursday night, how will the BNP-Jamaat clique participate in the elections? They have burnt people to death and do not want any development of the people. Most importantly, they fear electoral defeat.
He said, "Many people say that there is no democracy in Bangladesh and BNP does not participate in elections." Which face will the BNP contest the elections in? In the 2008 general elections, the 20-party alliance led by the BNP-Jamaat won 29 seats and no questions were raised about the fairness of the elections. They were 20 parties, but they got only 29 seats. Later they got one more seat in the by-election.
He said the BNP-Jamaat alliance boycotted the 2014 general elections fearing defeat.
The Prime Minister said this while addressing the chief guest at a civic reception for Bangladeshi expatriates living in Japan organized here at Westin Tokyo.
He said that to prevent the 2014 national elections, the BNP-Jamaat clique burnt 70 government offices, killed 500 people and damaged government property by arson.
He said, 'If people have human qualities, then they can never burn people to death. Those who have committed such atrocious incidents, they can participate in the elections under any circumstances.
Referring to the closure of the community clinics established nationwide by the Awami League government to provide health care to the grassroots, the Prime Minister said that it is necessary to win the hearts of the people by working for their welfare without stopping any given facility.
He also said that Khaleda Zia had said that she had closed community clinics after coming to power. Because those who will take health care from the clinic, they will vote for Awami League.
Criticizing those who want to say that there is no democracy in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister said that Bangladesh had democracy only when the country was occupied with dictatorship, vote rigging and yes or no voting.
